WSJ.com - Four Tips: Smart Money Moves for a Down Economy
Several smart moves... what I like best is the idea of converting depressed IRAs into Roth IRAs! Potentially saving $1,000s of dollars in future taxes as the economy recovers.

The stippet below captures my thoughts exactly. I always appreciate a writer who can covey what I am not able to covey in my own words.
Phelps’s Epic Journey Ends in Perfection - NYTimes.com: "... perhaps, it had never been focus he lacked, but, rather, a goal worthy of his focus.
The only loss Phelps sustained all week was for words. “I’ve been speechless,” he said. How could he explain all that he was feeling? “If you dream as big as you can dream,” he said, “anything is possible.”"
Prior to reading this article in the NYT, I posted thoughts on twitter about having our own Olympic size goals. I have no problem focusing on my own big goals but still wonder if they are not big enough? I've come to understand that the key to achieving big goals is about knowing what I/we really, really want. But it is also about about what am I willing to sacrifice to get them. Michael Phelps and his family and the countless other Olympic athletes have accomplished so much, but they have also sacrificed so much.
My paradox is that I don't want to sacrifice time with my family to achieve my own big goals. My big goals are all about being a father who is present and engaged with his family. Being a family that experiences life together, doing whatever we want wherever we want to be. Is that asking too much? The odd thing is that I also believe this pretty much sums up what we all want, parent or not! So if there something we could do to achieve that end, why wouldn't we all do it? I've found that something for me and our family, are you looking for that too?

After co-leading a discussion about the principal of Be-Do-Have I thought more about it, and wanted to share it.
We too often focus on the outcome or the results and not the process of making it happen. It's easy to do since other people's results are in our faces all the time through advertising. I believe in the principal of Be, Do & Have.
Before we start thinking we first have to understand what our core beliefs are. My desire to become a great "fill in the blank", Is what drives my actions. Actions (Doing) are the consistent steps we take to get the results I desire. Having then becomes a result of what I already believe.
I know it is a nuance but thinking is not believing. Our beliefs, right or wrong, are what drive our thoughts and actions.
If we take an inventory of what we believe about ourselves. We can then rid ourselves of the beliefs that don't serve our purpose. The way to do that is to create a daily affirmation. For example: I am a talented and gifted athlete. I communicate with clarity and vision. I lead people to achieve their greatest goals in life.
Note that affirmations are written in a present and not the future. By telling our subconscious minds we already have what we desire. Doing so changes our mental filtering system. We start to see things from a different perspective.
It is the best way I know to change the way we see the world and our place in it. They only way to change the world is to change ourselves and hour behavior. Opportunities to achieve your biggest goals and results will appear from nowhere simply because you have changed what you believe about yourself.

A Soldier Who Documented Lives In Conflict : NPR: "Michael Bogar says Jason had started to enroll in art school. He wanted to travel the world, capturing stories of the cultures he encountered through film."
This is a quote from a story about Jason Bogar who was killed in July 2008 on his third tour of Afghanistan and Iraq. He had joined the Army just prior to 9-11. During his service he discovered a passion for photographing people and their culture. As Americans we can honor the lives lost by passionately following our own dreams and aspirations.

World is home to more than 10 million millionaires - CNN.com: "Ten million may seem like a big number for such an elite club, but it still represents less than one-fifth of 1 percent of the world's 6.7 billion people."
One-third of the millionaires in the world live in the US.

Wealth Statistics: "The self-employed are the wealthy folks of America. The average net worth of a family where the head of a household works for someone else is $65,000. When it comes to the self-employed, the average net worth is $352,300." Although this was published back in 2003 I doubt much has changed.

Life.
From Dan Perjovschi's "What Happened to Us?" exhibit at MOMA. I won't repeat what I said on Digg. The point as I see it is, we spend too much time trying to make other people happy and too little time doing what makes us happy. It's your life, enjoy it.

You CAN make money in home-based businesses.
It could be one of the best moves you'll ever make.
First, let's get some frequent questions off the table. This is not multi-level marketing (MLM). No, you don't have to recruit your friends and family. Regarding income potential, see the chart below of recent results people just like you are having every week. If you qualify our time, I'll introduce you to someone who made $54,000 in one week this past December. You can judge for yourself if you think it's real or not. We simply made a decision to get started and created the lives we wanted, and deserve. You can too.
What would your life be like if there were no longer any constraints on the amount of money you could earn? What if your ability to earn money wasn't tied to a location? What if you were associated with a community of people who all work together to achieve and celebrate individual success? Though it may seem too good to be true, it's not. I've experienced it, and it is very real and life-changing.
Not only am I accomplishing my own personal goals but I am also with my family everyday. I work my business making carpool runs, helping with homework or while taking a break to go swing outside with the kids. More importantly, I am home everyday and night spending time with my family. Why in this day of age doesn't everybody work from home? I run my business while I live my life.
MY STORY...
After many successful years selling high-end products in the corporate world, I was ready for a change. I did some consulting, got involved in a start-up, and other endeavors. But more importantly I found a far more fulfilling life than what I had before. I took the time to design and build a playhouse for my girls which is featured on HomeDepot.com/truestories, pursued athletic goals I put off for years and re-connected with my family, community and church.
When I started looking for a job, I wanted to maintain the income I was accustom to, but giving up what I had enjoyed for the past two years kept me awake at night. I had convinced myself the kind of income I wanted, had to come at a high personal cost in terms of time away from family and stress. I started looking for a job and found something much much better...
WHAT I FOUND...
... and decided to move forward with after weeks of research, is a home-based business. Founded in 2001, it is a proven business that doesn't involve lotions, potions or pills. What it does offer is personal development training that teachs ordinary people how to get the personal and financial results they want from their lives.
Having a business that could be run from home or anywhere in the world was an added bonus. But you can't have a successful business without great products and/or services. But unlike many "home-based" businesses it is not about a magic formula. It's about tapping your internal potential through time tested personal development principals. I am a product of the product and have seen the dramatic results in other people's lives too. You can't put desire, belief, imagination or persistence into a bottle. You have to tap into them to get the energy, confidence and knowledge you need to succeed. It is there, but most people don't know how to get to it. We can help you, and you in turn, can help others.
WHAT ATTRACTED ME
The inspiring community of people, the first-class products and a business model that is not MLM (multi-level marketing). But I also needed to earn a living, and the potential to earn a top-level income from home is what motivated me to get started.
We are people just like you living the life of our dreams, working 20-30 hours a week from wherever we choose to be.
What I don't do:
What do I do? I talk to people like you to determine if you qualify for our time. How do I find them; the same way you found me.
ARE YOU QUALIFIED?
Here's the bottom line... if you are ready to make your future and have the time and money to enjoy it, you've found something that is worth serious consideration. You definitely owe it to yourself to learn more.
The main ingredient everybody here has in common, and you should bring to the table, is the desire and expectation to improve your situation and yourself each day going forward.
If you are serious about learning how to take control of your life, then you are the kind of person I am looking for, please complete the form on the left. I will be back with you today or the next business day.
Lots of money.
It could be one of the best moves you'll ever make.
Notice the word "could." Anyone who has spent even a little time on the Internet has already been bombarded with banner ads and spam e-mails that promise to deliver wealth beyond belief for doing practically nothing. Just a few clicks and you're making money. You may have even fallen for one of these scams, and felt a bit foolish when the results you expected failed to materialize.
In contrast, this is about work and commitment, but on your terms, not someone else's. Even if you don't want to leave your job, shouldn't you build a source of income that isn't tied to your employment status? Just how many layoffs, take-overs, mergers and "right sizings" are you going to survive?
